This project is inspired in part by the poem Where I’m From, by George Ella Lyon.
Philly community members will be invited to rehearsals to share personal stories about home and belonging, and we will use these stories to create original scenes. Songs and personal writings from young people will join the stories together to create a theatrical production as rich and warm as the communities we are from! Our process for making theater will be highly collaborative as we seek to use improvisation, personal reflection, scene development, storytelling, and music to build devised theater together.
MAJORS: The major is the area your child MOST wants to focus on in this project. Select your major on the registration form. All participants will be involved in the creation of the story and chorus numbers.
ACTING: Concentrate on fine-tuning acting skills, stage presence, and line delivery. Bigger acting parts will go to people in this group.
SINGING: Concentrate on music, learn harmonies, basic vocal techniques, choral and solo singing.
DESIGN/TECH: Concentrate on the design of set and costumes. Choose to have mostly behind-the-scenes jobs and/or choose to sing in the main chorus songs.
It is a fundamental SJ goal to keep the cost of tuition on the low end so that we can be accessible to more families in our community. If you are able, please consider making a donation to our scholarship fund on the registration form. We offer scholarships for all of our productions.
Staging Journeys’ goal in youth theater is to bring young people of various backgrounds and ages together to share their stories, their messages, and their talents on the stage, creating original works by children for their community.
